Calcutta High Court fines Mamata Banerjee Rs 5 lakh.
The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This fine was imposed on Mamta because Mamta had sought removal of the hearing of a petition related to the election from the bench of Justice Kaushik Chanda. Mamta had accused Justice Chanda of having links with the BJP. He had said that a photo of Justice Chanda has surfaced, in which he is seen with BJP leaders. In such a situation, it is not right for him to be associated with this case.
Justice Chanda had reserved the decision in this case on June 24. Delivering the verdict on Wednesday, he said that Mamata has tried to tarnish the image of the judiciary. However, Justice Chanda himself has decided to withdraw from this case. But he said, “It is inconceivable that there is a conflict of interest in this case. Those creating trouble should not be given a chance to continue the dispute. If the unwanted problem with the case continues, it will be against the interests of justice.
