Hathras rape victim’s body forcibly taken away for the funeral by UP police alleges family; police deny the claim
Family of the Hathras gang-rape victim alleged that the police cremated her body in the middle of the night without their consent. Police have denied allegations.
New Delhi: A 20-year-old woman, gang-raped and tortured by four men in Hathras two weeks ago, died this morning at a hospital in Delhi. The woman had suffered multiple fractures, paralysis and a deep gash in her tongue in the savage assault compared by many to the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape.
Injuries to her neck had left her paralyzed and struggling to breathe, said doctors. She bit her tongue when her attackers were trying to strangle her.
According to her brothers, even in that critical state, all she wanted was to go home and had said it often in the hospital.
The family of a 19-year-old Dalit woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, who died in a Delhi hospital of injuries sustained when she was gang-raped, has alleged that she was forcibly cremated.
The family claimed that the woman’s body was taken away by the police in the middle of the night for final rites.
“The police have forcibly taken the dead body and my father along with them for cremation. When my father reached Hathras, he was immediately taken (to the crematorium) by the police,” the woman’s brother told news agency PTI.
The body of the woman reached her village around midnight and the cremation was done by 3 am on Wednesday.
The family of the now-deceased victim of the horrific Hathras gangrape alleged that the police cremated her body in the middle of the night without their consent. According to sources, a major scuffle broke out between villagers and District Magistrate and other senior police officials. The villagers claimed that the family had not been allowed to leave the residence, sources added.
'Police have forcibly taken the dead body'
Local police officers, however, told news agency PTI that the cremation was being carried out as per the wishes of the family. The woman was raped in a village in Hathras by four men on September 14. After her condition deteriorated, she was referred to Delhi's Safdarjung hospital where she breathed her last on Tuesday.
The family left from Safdarjung hospital in Delhi on Tuesday night amid heavy police deployment. The body was taken by the Uttar Pradesh police, which reached Hathras earlier than the family members, claimed kin of the victim.
Another relative said that the woman's father was accompanied by 30 to 40 people, chiefly relatives and others from their neighborhood had gone to the crematorium near Bool Garhi village, under Chandpa police station limits, in the district in western UP. Senior police and administration officials were also present at the crematorium in the middle of the night, an official said.
The brutality against the teenager has sparked outrage across the country with several political leaders, Bollywood actors, and activists demanding justice for her.
The case has drawn parallels with the gang rape of a 23-year-old student in Delhi, who was attacked on a moving bus and left to die on a roadside in 2012.
“A Dalit girl who was a victim of demoniac behavior in Hathras has passed away at Safdarjung Hospital. For two weeks, she kept struggling between life and death in hospitals,” Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi said on Twitter. She added that incidents of rape in Hathras, Shahjahanpur, and Gorakhpur had shaken the state.
